Call for UCMR Linnaeus Program Gender Support grants

The UCMR Linnaeus program actively attempts to reinforce and increase the role of women in science. The objective is to achieve a gender equal distribution within each of the principal investigator categories, i.e. for research professors/teachers with tenure and junior research group leaders.

Female scientists holding positions as assistant/associated professor (forskarassistent/universitetslektor) are invited to apply for research grants of 500 kSEK/year during two years.

Entitled to apply are female group leaders associated with UCMR at Umeå University and who have established themselves as independent principal investigators with research of relevance for infection biology.

The call is closed.

Publication in PLoS Genetics: New important player identified in the synthesis of building blocks of DNA

scheme_thumbAndrei Chabes and his group at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics publishes new research results in PLoS Genetics (open-access journal by the Public Library of Science). The group, which is also part of The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Sweden (MIMS) studies DNA repair in yeast. Their findings show how the protein lxr1 is involved in the regulation of DNA repair (click on picture for larger view of the regulation scheme).

Streptococcus_pyogenes_thumbWhen bacteria get the flu and sharpen their knives:  Scientists identify a novel pathway to activate the bacterial immune system

It is true; also microbes get infected by viruses. Consequently, they have evolved immunity mechanisms to fend off attacks by the enemy. In bacteria and archaea CRISPR/Cas has recently been discovered as a novel immune system to fight alien genomes. ...

New methods for infectious diseases research developed at UCMR

UCMR scientists are studying the properties of bacteria with the same methods that materials scientists use to research surfaces. Studies of the outermost parts of the cell walls of bacteria yield new information about the chemical composition of structures that are key to the capacity of bacteria to infect organisms.
