The prize committee at the Faculty of Medicine, Umeå University, decided to award Emmanuelle Charpentier with Umeå University's Eric K. Fernström prize 2011 for young and promising scientists. The prize amount is 100.000 Swedish Krona and Emmanuelle will be honoured at a Umeå University's annual ceremony in autumn and receive the prize from the Fernström foundation on November 2nd, 2011 at Lund University. Andrei Chabes and his group at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics publishes new research results in PLoS Genetics (open-access journal by the Public Library of Science). The group, which is also part of The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Sweden (MIMS) studies DNA repair in yeast. Their findings show how the protein lxr1 is involved in the regulation of DNA repair (click on picture for larger view of the regulation scheme).

Constantin Urban and his colleagues at MIMS have uncovered a new disease mechanism in patients with Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD) in an international clinical collaboration with the University Children's Hospital in Zurich. The Swedish Society of Medicine awarded Staffan Normark, a UCMR Linnaeus Visiting Professor, with their prestigious prize and celebrated him with a honoury lecture at the Society's meeting in February. Normark, professor in Infectious Disease Control at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, was awarded for his "fundamental discoveries in bacteriology in Pasteur's spirit and tradition".
