EM Workshop: Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy for Life Science

UCEM logo posWelcome to a workshop on Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy for Life Science at Umeå University,

17-19 November 2014.
The registration is closed now.

Organized at KBC by Umeå Core Facility for Electron Microscopy (UCEM) and sponsored by Swedish Bioimaging.

The workshop will focus on applications for Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) in life sciences. Techniques for preparation of biological samples for SEM imaging and correlative fluorescent microscopy and SEM will be presented in lectures and practical demonstrations. SEM imaging will be demonstrations on Gemini II Zeiss Merlin Field Emission SEM at UCEM. Imaging methods, including topographic and high materials contrast imaging. Techniques like fixation, drying, sectioning, immunolabeling, cryo methods, block phase imaging and more will be presented by both researchers and equipment manufacturer. Participants are welcome to bring samples, which will be imaged depending on feasibility. Selected participants are also invited to give short presentations of their projects.

The workshop will be held at Umeå Core Facility for Electron Microscopy, Chemical Biological Centre (KBC), Umeå University and SLU, Umeå SE-901 87, Sweden.

Starting Monday17th November 12:00 and ending 19th November 12:30, but participants can stay longer for individual demonstrations and imaging.

Invited speakers:

  • Paul Walther, Ulm University
  • Heinz Horstmann, Heidelberg University
  • Matthias Mörgelin – Lund University
  • Eija Jokitalo, University of Helsinki
  • Ola Gustafsson – Lund University
  • Eric Hummel, EM Specialist Life Sciences, Zeiss Germany
  • Xiong Liu, EM Specialist Life Sciences, Zeiss Germany

Workshop invitation as pdf is available here

The workshop, lectures and demonstrations, are free-of-charge and includes lunch, coffee and one workshop dinner. Lectures are open to all. Lab demonstrations are limited to 16 participants. To participate, please submit the registration form (link below) by October 8th 2014. To participate in the lab demonstrations, kindly prepare a motivation statement (max. 300 words) addressing the topic of your current research. If necessary, selection will be based on the written motivation statement.

We have pre-reserved hotel rooms for course participants. Swedish Bioimaging will sponsor the hotel costs for students and postdocs traveling to Umeå, and you will receive more information about practical arrangements after registration and acceptation.
