Welcome to UCMR, Umeå Centre for Microbial Research
UCMR is an interdisciplinary research centre established by a consortium of scientists representing medical & molecular microbiology, molecular & structural biology, chemistry & physics, and is devoted to top quality research and novel applications in the fields of microbial pathogenesis. The consortium aims to initiate and coordinate supportive efforts at UmU in the research fields of UCMR: e.g. to promote collaboration; to organize seminars and workshops; to organize technology platforms and to obtain funding.

Microbial virulence: Bacterial and viral cell attachment, bacterial protein delivery, proliferation of intracellular bacteria, and extracellular parasites.

SSF grant to UCMR researchers for infection biology research
Mikael Elofsson, Professor at Umeå University received 25 million SEK from the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research. This funding will support an infection research project with the aim to identify novel, alternative antibiotics that have a decreased risk for the development of antibiotic resistance.
Co-operators in this project are Åke Forsberg, Professor at Umeå University and Herwig Schüler, group leader at the Karolinska Institutet.

Iain Mattaj, Professor and Director General of EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory), is the driving force behind the establishment of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine with MIMS as the Swedish partner.

First seven postdocs recruited to the new UCMR Postdoctoral Programme
The first call within the new UCMR Postdoctoral Research Program in Molecular Infection Medicine and Infection Biology was advertised in the autumn of 2012 and the first postdoctoral researchers have now joined seven different research groups within UCMR/MIMS. A second call for additional candidates is planned for spring/summer 2013 (see "Open positions").

Several positions are open for postdoctoral candidates interested to do research in the highly interactive and multidisciplinary research environment UCMR – Umeå Centre for Microbial Research at Umeå University.
UCMR includes The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) - the Swedish node of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine. UCMR-MIMS researchers combine a strong molecular infection biology programme with chemical biology to clarify molecular mechanisms of microbial infections. We aim to recruit new postdoctoral scientists with competence and ideas that will strengthen the research environment and contribute to its renewal.

Welcome to the inauguration of UCEM! The Umeå Core Facility Electron Microscopy will celebrate the inauguration of a new high resolution field emission SEM equipped with a cryo-stage. The new Field Emission SEM instrument has a unique lens and detector design that opens up new avenues for research in life science, plant biotechnology/wood science, and material science.
