 France) obtained a master degree at Georgetown University\, Washington\, D
 C. Back in France\, she obtained her PhD in Paris in the Institut Pasteur 
 where she has headed the «&nbsp\;Bacteria-Cell Interactions&nbsp\;»unit \,
  also an Inserm and an INRA unit\, until recently. After studying DNA-prot
 ein interactions\, in <em>E. coli</em>\, she started in 1986\, to study th
 e molecular and cellular basis of infections by intracellular bacteria tak
 ing as a model the bacterial pathogen <em>Listeria monocytogenes</em>. Pas
 cale Cossart pioneered the field of Cellular Microbiology. Her research ha
 s led to new concepts in infection biology but also in fundamental microbi
 ology (in particular RNA biology)\, in cell biology and also in epigenetic
 s. Her contributions have been recognized by a number of awards\, includin
 g the Robert Koch Prize (2007)\, the Louis Jeantet Prize for Medicine (200
 8)\, the Balzan Prize(2013)\, the Heinrich Wieland prize (2018)\, and the 
 NAS Selman Waksman Award (2021). She is a member of the French Academy of 
 Science (2002)\, a foreign member of the American National Academy of Scie
 nce (NAS) (2009)\, of the German Leopoldina (2001)\, of the Royal Society 
 (2010) and the National Academy of Medecine (NAM) (2014). Since January 20
 16\, she is Secrétaire Perpétuel at the French Academy of Sciences.</span>
